Rolls-Royce to Fuel AI Operations Using Nuclear Energy

Key Takeaway

As AI technology advances, concerns about the energy and water consumption of its infrastructure are increasing. Data centers still rely heavily on fossil fuels, which account for 56% of their energy use. To combat this, Rolls-Royce is exploring nuclear power, specifically Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), to sustainably power AI operations. This initiative aligns with their ambition to become the UK’s most valuable company, as they continue to outperform competitors on the London Stock Exchange. CEO Tufan Erginbilgic emphasized their unique nuclear capabilities, asserting that they aim to be global market leaders in this sector.

As AI evolves, concerns are rising regarding the energy and water consumption of its infrastructure.

Data centres globally still depend heavily on fossil fuels. In fact, these highly polluting sources make up 56% of all energy consumed by data centres, according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.

Rolls-Royce is taking measures to tackle this issue by investigating the potential of nuclear power.

The engineering giant aims to power its AI operations with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the future.

While the objective is sustainability, the team at Rolls-Royce views this initiative as a step towards becoming the UK’s most valuable company. This journey is one Rolls-Royce has been on for some time, consistently surpassing competitors on the London Stock Exchange in recent months.

“There is no private company in the world with the nuclear capability we possess,” Tufan Erginbilgic, CEO of Rolls-Royce, stated recently to BBC News.

“If we are not the market leader globally, we must have done something wrong.”
